Zusammenfassung

Once Were Warriors

Chapter 1: A Woman in Pine Block

Characters: Beth(34) & Jake Heke
Their children: Nig(17), Abe (15), Boogie (14), Grace (13), Polly (10), Huata (7)

Beth is thinking about the world she is living in (like self-talking). Her living area is named ’Pine Block’
She wants to be diffrent and Jake doesn’t really listens to her, so she is in ‘hell’ since 16 years with him.

Life in the society is without books, that Beth recognise also by her children, they have just poseters of white famous people and magazines like ‘playboy’. Beth enjoys in generel her sex.
She describes her life with Jake, the neighboors, money and dreams of cinderella story. She sees herself as a fighter against people and life.
She knows about the life of children in her area: They are often alone, because their parents are away or drunken. So they haven’t got a real home, lovesource or playground.
There are two gangs in town: The Brown Fists and the Black Hawks.
Man are drunk because of what they are (Jake).
Grace doesn’t stand to Maori, she tells from the fights of Jake, cares for other kids.
There are women fights for laughing for the men, after that they sing and the parents hace an argue, while children hear everything.
To title: Now, they haven’t got any more a culture or pride.
Beth wants to speak to men about that, but Jake just hurts her (mess).
Next morning children clean up the mess. Grace thinks of ‘Lost Tribe’, own children and a man.
Jake brings food, says, there are no more worries, it’s the favorit meal of Beth. But he just wantet to say, that he got fired. Like the most of Maoris.
Jake is a Maori, but Beth only half.



Chapter 2: Two kids on a bench
Boogie is with Grace in the childrens court, because he was stealing things. They get feelings of hatress from the others against the Maoris. Jake hates Boogie, because he doesn’t fight, is smart, kind, sensitive, tall and hates violence. But Nig wants to become a Brown Fist.

Chapter 3: They who have history
Inside the court, it’s like a palace. Boogs real name is Mark. He didn’t go to school, because he was scared of the others. No parents with him. He is sent to a Boys home.
Grace wants to visit him much. To the history: There are many pictures on the wall of famous people, what the maoris dont have.

Chapter 4: ...And those with another
They walk out of court, Maoris mock about them. Grace says good-bye to Boogie.




Chapter 5: Tennessee Waltz
Beth wakes up with pain – also in her heart. She has self-pity and killing thougths against Jake. She recognise that she had missed the Boog-court and is crying, while she is going to the kid bedrooms. Strong emotions and many thoughts are running through her: Things of general habit, that people only thinkg and do nothing, remembers past and many hittings. She has clothes everywhere in the house, smoke and beer, that she could leave everytime.
So she gets drunk in backyard. Thinks about Grace and that she is mysterious and quiet. Then about what music means to them oll: Romance, sentiments, Maori.
+ Maori (befor Pine Block): Shy, musicial, share things, passion, style, laid-back, humour, no material possessions, everything in heart.
-Maori (now): Beer, fists, passion of fight
The kids are for her more important then food. Jakes wake up and Grace come home crying. Grace and Betz hold each other, but they feel like strangers. They want to save money to go visit Boogi. Jake leaves and Beth drinks more, remember half drunk half in phantsies, like Moaris have been: War, warrior, savages, thoughtness, rudunant, laughter. She dances to her favorit music and Grace watch her.

Chapter 6: Jake and the broken of hearts and spirits (das Kapitel hani nöd so tscheggt)
Jake lives in a physical world, where fists and violence are most important. He thinks of Beth and that she is still there, although she has now to cope with olny the half of the money. He drives with friend away from Pine and feels like a king. Houses chanke and get nicer, what make Jake get ill, feel observed and so he has a quarrel with his friend only about the rid light. He thinks that the old and the new Maoris are ‘the same underneath’.
Cold world of ‘McClutchy’s’. There he has a collision because of the music -> mess and fight. Jake is never sure, who he is. Thinks of shy and scared Maoris, because of the two singers. Thinks of Boogie. Feels like a chief ‘together we stand, together we fall’, they have hope without understanding. If they are drunk, there are changes.
Brown Fists come in and there get tension between them and Jake. Jimmy Bad Horse is the guider of the gang. After the quarrel they go home partying. More thoughts of Jake, at least he is thankful for his life, that he isnt a burglar or something.

Chapter 7: The nights last act
Grace is in other world: nice black piano with a girl playing and her parents standing behind. She thinks about the funeral traditions, that you bring the body home... Then she runs away and hurts herself. Home, there is the party. She just wants fathers love, talkes, goes up to bed.
Rape. Panic: Who raped her? Hurts, why? Goes to Toot (friend), tells him about it and they’ra holding hands – warm and satisfy

Chapter 8: The visit
Beth is happy and looks good, because they have rented a car to visit Boogie. The kids are in the back – ‘what more could a pine block mother wants?’. They see Nig with Brown Fists. They talk and laugh, enjoy it – the car- while its there. They drive through a rich area and for Jake it gets clear that this all is only a taste of happiness, so he gets angry and disappointed. Beth thinks about love, manhood, emotions, relations. Jake hesitat longer to drive to Boogie, tells about his childhood drama: ‘the slave disease’ of his family.
He stops by pup and goes in ‘only for one’. But he doesnt come again longtime, Beth goes also in, but he only says, that they would go tomorrow. Beth drunk and gets kids away, theres only disappointment and empty swears.
Guys eat picnick uf Boog in pup. Jake drives around in the car, with the drunken Beth in the back.
Boogie waited the whole day, now, there are no more dreams.

Chapter 9: Loveless, she stumbled
Grace smokes with Toot a joint and wants also glue, but he first dont want to give her. Grace tells him, that she was raped again and has revenge plans. She goes watching the Trumberts, the rich family with the happy girl at the piano. And she feels robbed of her own life. She struggles herself at a tree there.

Chapter 10: They who have history 2
Funeral of Grace. Beth thinks a lot of her aunts, the traditions and gives the guilt to Jake or their whole race. There are elder speechers, who speak in a foreign language. Melancholic singing, Beth has to be strong. War dance is racing, pride, inspirence, strength.
Jake is going on with pity, drinking – fighter turns in dad of the suicide girl.
Boogie is at funeral and Beth is very proud of him. Also the Trambert comes, wants to know, who have killed herself on his ground. Mavis is singing good. Toot says good-bye.

Chapter 11: The house of angry belonging
Nig is out wiht Brown Fists, his new family, feels cool, but is thinking about Grace and wants to go to the funural, but Jimmy doesn’t let him go. Nig recognises, that Jimmy has ordinary eyes. They welcome Nig in the tribe, belongings, beer, joints, music.
By Jake is a big party and a woman asks for the priest, who can do the house (spirits of Grace). Jake gets angry, also because he wasn’t at the funural. He does the same es Nig: Drink & Be Happy. Then Beth comes home and gets all out of the house, also Jake, so nabours begin to chat about the family.
Nig in ‘besetztem’ house of the Fists with a girl names Tania. First they have a quarrel and a discussion, tillit comes to sex. As they calm down, they talk about Grace, the funural and the backgrounds of Tania (her family burnt in the house, while she got food). They speak about orgasm and a second time to have sex, now it is only belonging, perhaps love?

Chapter 12: Visits
Jim and Nig want a TV from a guy in a house. Second time they hurt his woman and kids are crying. Nig begins to ‘zweifeln’, what he is doing here and if he were like is fahter. The dream turns in a nightmare.

Chapter 13: Letter from the grave
Beth gets a letter of Grace from the police. Where Grace writes, that she was raped and that she thinks, it was her dad. For Beth her children were hope, thats now broke. She waits for Jake and shouts at him in front of others, he gets away. Jake wandering around, thinks if he were too drunk, can’t rememer and is ashamed. Sonny Boy, a strong guy is back, physical better than Jake. He just hurt, walks aroung somewhere.

Chapter 14: Hark! The people cometh
Beth begins to help and feed kids. She thinks sometimes about Jake, but can’t forgive him. So she educates kids also at home. One day a kid on street dies, from now on, she wants to give the kids the heart pride, love and listening.

Chapter 15: The will of the people
Jake lives in daydreams, goes from friend to friend and from house to house, he misses Beth and wants to become a bouncer, but gets fired because of a fight. Suddenly, no friends left and he recognise that he is homeless. Gets Chinese food. Starts to live in park, thinks of his kids.
He feels hurt, lonely and wants company, but goes ever to ‘Clutchys’. Meet the alkies and want to go home with them.
Chapter 16: Deep Tattoo
Te Tupaea speaks of real Maori history for all the people. Tells of dance and his meaning to show ‘this is me’. Speaks of the problems of beer and the warriorhood.
Nig gets a face tattoo like an old maori, Tania is with him.
Beth heard the speech and gets inspired, has hope for Pine Block.

Chapter 17: Love is where you find it
Jake meets a boy named Cody in the park. They come into chatting about Christmas and that they would eat together Chinese and also, that they were both no alkies. Winos (streetkids) had observed Jake, so Cody knows much about him. Talking, trusting, chilling. Jake promise Cody, to do nothing at night and to spend Christmas together.
Nig has a dream of his inner conflict.

Chapter 18: And still they cometh
Mavis sings in community hall and Pine Block has changed. They know now, that it is a permanent change, ever more people, but still some are partying. Theres no more hope, because there is now knowless of happenings.
Nig gets hurt in a fight and Tania is too drunk to help him. She gets naked and offers herself to the others. Chief tells about rugby strength and so Browns leave to face the Hawks. Beth sees them and knows, aching.

Chapter 19: So life, it is for those who fight
Funeral of Nig. Although pride and hapiness of people, who know now the songs and traditions. Jake is also there and cries.
